René Wilhelmy — A Lifetime Dedicated to Classical Guitar Making

Based in Montréal, Québec, René Wilhelmy began his journey into lutherie around 1977, while studying classical guitar. Originally drawn to instrument making through his fascination with early music and the lute, he developed his craft largely through independent study, experimentation, and a deep appreciation for the great European guitar-making traditions.

His early influences included the legendary instruments of Robert Bouchet and José Ramírez, as well as the musical legacy of Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya. These influences helped shape his approach to building guitars that combine refined craftsmanship with musical sensitivity.

Over more than four decades, Wilhelmy has handcrafted more than 200 instruments, primarily classical guitars, with his work reaching musicians and collectors throughout Canada and internationally.

His dedication to the craft extends beyond his own workshop. Since 2015, he has shared his expertise through technical instruction at Lutherie-Guitare Bruand, in association with the Cégep du Vieux Montréal, helping pass traditional guitar-making knowledge to new generations of luthiers.

His instruments have also attracted the attention of distinguished guitarists, including Álvaro Pierri and Jérôme Ducharme, reflecting the respect his craftsmanship has earned within the classical guitar community.

This beautifully preserved 1989 René Wilhelmy offers a remarkable opportunity to experience an instrument from the earlier years of a distinguished Canadian luthier’s career.
