Renan Aouam, born in 1986, developed a passion for music at a young age, starting with the piano…
During his teenage years, he discovered a love for woodworking during an internship with a cabinetmaker specializing in antique furniture restoration.
Driven by curiosity, he began building guitars on his own before pursuing formal training in Madrid.
In 2018, he established his first workshop in Pamplona, marking the beginning of his professional journey.
Some words direct from the luthier…
The two luthiers who have inspired me the most are undoubtedly Jean-Noël Rohe, who has deeply influenced my vision of guitar making, and Jean-Pierre Mazé, successor to Robert Bouchet.
Upon my return to France, Jean-Pierre kindly took me under his wing and passed on the heritage of the great French lutherie tradition, which he himself inherited from his master. I now have the privilege of being his only student, and I continue to learn from him to this day.
As I mentioned, I like to follow my own path when it comes to the design of my guitars. I strive for a distinctive sound, one that remains faithful to the traditional aesthetic yet incorporates a touch of modernity — a sound that reflects what I love most about the great classical guitars, while meeting the needs of today’s musicians.
My varnishes are developed according to the same philosophy. I craft my mixtures from different natural resins — such as dammar, olibanum, and copal — combined with shellac. Each resin has its own viscoelastic properties, and I adapt my formulas depending on the wood I’m working with. There is therefore no fixed recipe; everything depends on balance and sensitivity.
I firmly believe that, in guitar making, the essential thing is to listen to the material and, above all, to follow one’s own path.
