The Historic Tárrega Guitar — Recreated in a Comfortable 630mm Scale
The Wolfgang Jellinghaus FE 17-1A offers the guitarist or collector an opportunity to experience a reproduction of the celebrated Antonio de Torres FE 17 of 1864, widely known as the “Tárrega guitar.”
With its compact historical proportions, 630mm scale, 51.5mm nut and remarkably light 1.3 kg / 2.8 lbs construction, this version is particularly appealing to players who appreciate a shorter scale and comfortable dimensions while remaining connected to one of the most fascinating periods in classical-guitar history.
Its German “Moon Cut” Spruce soundboard and Maple back and sides give the instrument a beautifully traditional foundation, complemented by a wood rosette and elegant Kingwood appointments.
The visual character is completed by an exceptionally well-executed hand-rubbed French polish with an aged relic appearance, giving the guitar the atmosphere of an instrument from another era.
For anyone fascinated by Torres, Tárrega and the origins of the modern classical guitar, the FE 17-1A presents that history in an intimate, lightweight and highly playable instrument.

The Guitar — The 1864 FE 17
The original Antonio de Torres FE 17 was built in 1864 and became widely known as the Tárrega guitar through its association with Francisco Tárrega, one of the defining figures in the history of classical guitar.
The FE 17 belongs to the smaller-bodied designs found within Torres’s work and was considered at the time to be among his finer and more expensive instruments.
That compact architecture is central to this Jellinghaus reproduction. This particular FE 17-1A combines the historical concept with a 630mm scale and 51.5mm nut, creating an especially approachable configuration for players who prefer shorter reaches and compact proportions.
The combination of German Spruce and Maple, together with the wood rosette and Kingwood appointments, maintains the elegant simplicity associated with the historical design. Its aged French-polish treatment completes the presentation, giving the instrument an unmistakably old-world character.
Rather than simply offering a modern guitar with vintage styling, the FE 17-1A provides an opportunity to explore the proportions and aesthetic philosophy of an important nineteenth-century Torres design.
Antonio de Torres — The Foundation of the Modern Classical Guitar
Antonio de Torres Jurado (1817–1892) occupies a singular place in guitar history.
His work during the nineteenth century helped establish many of the proportions, construction principles and acoustic ideas that became fundamental to the development of the modern Spanish classical guitar.
His instruments became closely associated with important guitarists of the period, including Francisco Tárrega, whose influence as a performer, composer and teacher helped shape the future direction of classical guitar.
The FE 17 belongs to this remarkable period when the identity of the modern classical guitar itself was taking shape.
Wolfgang Jellinghaus & The Milestone Luthier Centre
The Milestone Luthier Centre was founded in 2013 by Wolfgang Jellinghaus and Michael Zhang with the goal of revisiting the history of classical guitar making through instruments based on the work of influential master builders whose ideas established important new standards in construction and sound.
The project explores approximately 230 years of guitar-making history, studying historically significant designs and bringing them back to life for contemporary guitarists.
Research and development takes place in Dortmund, Germany, while the guitar-making workshop is located in Guangzhou, China.
The FE 17-1A forms part of this exploration, giving today’s players and collectors an opportunity to experience the proportions and character of an important Torres design.
