Dedicated to the Legacy of Hermann Hauser I

The Wolfgang Jellinghaus Bavaria 1A is a beautifully executed replica inspired by the work of Hermann Hauser I (1882–1952) and the legendary instrument he created for Andrés Segovia.

Based on the 1912 Ramirez and Torres SE 43 that Segovia played, the Bavaria 1A follows the design that ultimately led Hauser to create his celebrated 1937 model—the guitar Segovia famously considered the finest instrument he had ever played.

Exceptionally light and beautifully balanced, the Bavaria 1A offers a lyrical, singing voice with excellent note separation, clarity and tonal refinement. Its responsive character and effortless playability make it equally appealing to performers, advanced students and collectors of historically inspired instruments.

A beautifully crafted tribute to one of the most important guitars in classical guitar history — an instrument that truly deserves to be experienced.

The Bavaria 1A pays tribute to the extraordinary work of Hermann Hauser I, one of the most influential European guitar makers of the 20th century.

Its story is inseparable from Andrés Segovia and one of the most celebrated collaborations in classical guitar history.

When Segovia visited Hauser, he asked the German luthier to build an instrument based on the 1912 Manuel Ramírez and Torres SE 43 guitar that he was playing at the time. Hauser followed Segovia’s request and, through his own meticulous study and craftsmanship, developed what would become his legendary 1937 Hauser guitar.

Segovia ultimately acquired the instrument and famously regarded it as the finest guitar he had ever played. The original 1937 Hauser is now part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, further establishing its place in the history of the classical guitar.

The Bavaria 1A draws inspiration from this remarkable lineage, combining traditional proportions and design elements with carefully selected modern tonewoods and meticulous craftsmanship.

The German Moon Cut Spruce soundboard provides clarity, projection and a beautifully articulate response, while the Madagascar Rosewood back and sides contribute depth, resonance, harmonic richness and sustain.

One of the most immediately striking characteristics of the Bavaria 1A is its exceptionally light weight. At approximately 1.5 kg, the guitar feels remarkably effortless to hold and responds quickly and naturally beneath the fingers.

Its voice is beautifully singing and lyrical, with excellent separation between individual notes. The balance across the register allows melodies to emerge with clarity while maintaining warmth and depth underneath—a quality particularly well suited to expressive classical repertoire.

The combination of a responsive construction, comfortable proportions and hand-rubbed French polish gives the instrument an intimate yet projecting character that rewards both subtle playing and more powerful interpretation.

The Milestone Luthier Centre

The Bavaria 1A is handcrafted at the Milestone Luthier Centre, founded in 2013 by Wolfgang Jellinghaus and Michael Zhang.

The centre was established with the goal of exploring and preserving important traditions from the history of classical guitar making, drawing inspiration from master builders of the past who established new standards in construction and sound.

Research and development are conducted at the centre in Dortmund, Germany, while the guitar-making workshop is located in Guangzhou, China.

The result is a carefully considered tribute to the Hauser tradition—an instrument that combines historical inspiration, beautiful craftsmanship, exceptional lightness and a refined, lyrical musical voice.

For players who appreciate the history of Segovia, Hauser and the great European guitar-making tradition, the Bavaria 1A is a particularly compelling instrument and a true must try.
