A Remarkable 1884 Torres Design in an Ultra-Compact 610mm Scale
The Wolfgang Jellinghaus SE-77 challenges expectations from the moment it is played. Based on a smaller-bodied Antonio de Torres guitar from 1884, this remarkable replica combines an exceptionally compact 610mm scale, narrow 49mm nut and an extraordinarily light weight of only 1 kg.
Its dimensions may suggest a delicate voice, but the experience is quite the opposite. This SE-77 delivers a surprisingly large, powerful and full-bodied sound, with lyrical trebles, rich basses and an abundance of overtones throughout the register.
The compact proportions also make it exceptionally inviting to play. The short scale, comfortable neck profile and immediate response create an instrument that feels effortless under the hands—an especially compelling choice for players seeking greater comfort without wanting a guitar that feels musically limited.
A German Spruce soundboard is paired with Granadilo back and sides, while the wood rosette, Rosewood appointments and hand-rubbed French polish preserve the understated elegance of the historical design. Its carefully executed relic/aged finish completes the presentation, evoking the appearance of a treasured nineteenth-century instrument.
For the serious student, experienced guitarist or collector seeking something genuinely different, the SE-77 combines historical character, exceptional playability and remarkable value in a wonderfully compact instrument.

The Guitar — The 1884 SE 77
The inspiration for this model is Antonio de Torres SE 77, a smaller-bodied, short-scale guitar dating from 1884.
Its proportions are striking even today. With a 610mm scale, 49mm nut, 42cm body length and weight of only 1 kg, the SE-77 is considerably more compact than a conventional modern classical guitar.
Yet those dimensions should not be mistaken for a small musical personality.
The instrument produces a remarkably substantial voice for its size—full-bodied and robust, with lyrical trebles, rich basses and plentiful overtones across the register. Its immediate response and comfortable neck further reinforce the sense that this is not simply a historical curiosity, but a guitar designed to be enjoyed and played.
The combination of German Spruce and Granadilo also gives this particular replica a distinctive construction, while its hand-applied French polish and carefully antiqued appearance reinforce its nineteenth-century inspiration without overwhelming the simplicity of the original design.
For players who have traditionally found a full 650mm classical guitar physically demanding—or simply prefer the intimacy and responsiveness of a smaller instrument—the SE-77 presents a particularly interesting alternative.
Antonio de Torres — The Foundation of the Modern Classical Guitar
Antonio de Torres Jurado (1817–1892) occupies a singular place in the history of the guitar.
His work during the nineteenth century helped establish many of the proportions, construction principles and acoustic concepts that became fundamental to the development of the modern Spanish classical guitar.
What makes an instrument such as the SE 77 particularly fascinating is that Torres’s work was not confined to a single standardized format. His surviving instruments demonstrate different dimensions and approaches, offering a glimpse into the experimentation and evolution that characterized his work.
The SE 77 of 1884 represents a particularly compelling example of how a remarkably compact instrument could still embody serious musical ambitions.
Wolfgang Jellinghaus & The Milestone Luthier Centre
The Milestone Luthier Centre was founded in 2013 by Wolfgang Jellinghaus and Michael Zhang with the goal of revisiting the history of classical guitar making through instruments based on the work of influential master builders whose ideas established important new standards in construction and sound.
The project explores approximately 230 years of guitar-making history, studying historically significant instruments of different designs, body sizes and scale lengths and bringing those concepts back into the hands of contemporary players.
Research and development takes place in Dortmund, Germany, while the guitar-making workshop is located in Guangzhou, China.
Produced in limited quantities, these Jellinghaus replicas offer players the opportunity to explore historically inspired designs at a considerably more accessible level than an original nineteenth-century instrument.
