Patrick Mailloux — A Passion for Classical Guitar Making
Based in the beautiful Lac-Beauport region, just north of Québec City, Patrick Mailloux is a Canadian luthier dedicated to creating handcrafted concert classical guitars that combine traditional techniques with modern acoustic innovation.
Having devoted himself professionally to guitar making since 2003, Mailloux has developed a distinctive approach to instrument construction, guided by a deep appreciation for the classical guitar, its history, and its expressive possibilities.
Each of his guitars is built individually by hand, using carefully selected tonewoods and a thoughtful combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. His work reflects a commitment to creating instruments with their own musical identity, tailored to the needs and preferences of the player.
Since 2010, Mailloux has explored double-top construction, incorporating lightweight Nomex honeycomb cores between thin layers of tonewood. This modern technique allows for an efficient soundboard designed to enhance projection, responsiveness, and tonal range while preserving structural integrity.
His approach also incorporates ergonomic innovations such as elevated fingerboards, armrests, and soundports, allowing guitarists to enjoy greater comfort and accessibility throughout the instrument’s register.
Drawing inspiration from distinguished guitar makers, including Daniel Friederich and Gregory Byers, Mailloux has developed his own artistic direction, combining acoustic refinement with an elegant and recognizable aesthetic.
His instruments have reached musicians internationally and have been featured in concert performances and international guitar competitions, reflecting the growing appreciation for his craftsmanship beyond Canada.
