Some guitars become even more compelling with time. This exceptional 2022 Douglass Scott N-124, offered in excellent condition, combines Scott’s refined traditional approach with the musical benefit of a European spruce soundboard that has already had several years to develop and open.

The result is a wonderfully expressive concert guitar with rich, warm basses, beautifully singing trebles, excellent clarity, separation and sustain. There is maturity to the voice, yet the instrument retains the vitality, brilliance and responsiveness that Douglass Scott seeks in his work.

Built with European spruce and Indian rosewood, N-124 represents a beautifully traditional side of Scott’s guitar making. Its elegant proportions, understated craftsmanship and lightweight construction allow the musical character of the instrument to remain at the centre of the experience.

For the guitarist searching for a refined Canadian concert instrument with warmth, clarity, maturity and a beautifully singing voice, N-124 offers a particularly attractive opportunity.

Douglass Scott builds only a limited number of instruments each year, and Grand Guitar Salon typically receives just one or two guitars annually.

The Guitar

What makes N-124 particularly appealing today is the combination of Scott’s craftsmanship and the natural development of its spruce soundboard since 2022.

The voice has developed a rich and inviting character, with warm, substantial basses and clear, singing trebles. Individual notes remain beautifully defined, giving the guitar excellent separation and allowing complex passages to retain clarity.

There is also a lovely sense of sustain throughout the register. Notes are given room to bloom and develop, contributing to an instrument that feels lyrical and expressive without sacrificing definition.

At only 1.5 kg, the guitar retains a light and responsive character beneath the hands, allowing the player to explore changes in dynamics and colour naturally.

It is an excellent opportunity to acquire an established Douglass Scott instrument that has already begun the process of musical maturation while remaining in excellent condition.

Warm, clear, responsive and wonderfully lyrical — a guitar that deserves to be experienced.

Douglass Scott — The Tradition Behind the Guitar

Born in Paris, France, Douglass Scott spent part of his childhood living and travelling internationally before eventually settling in Canada. He began studying classical guitar at seven years old while living in Singapore.

Scott built his first guitar in 1998 while studying music at university. His fascination with instrument making subsequently led him to guitar-building school, professional repair work on Vancouver Island and several years of close study and work alongside experienced luthiers.

He has been building guitars professionally full-time since 2004.

Scott describes his approach as fundamentally traditional, acknowledging the influence of Daniel Friederich, Ignacio Fleta and Antonio de Torres. His objective is to create guitars with vitality, malleability and colour, together with a broad and intuitive response in both dynamics and tone.

Balance, even sustain and brilliance are central to that philosophy, resulting in instruments intended to give the guitarist a wide expressive palette rather than impose a single character on the music.

Grand Guitar Salon

Douglass Scott produces only a very limited number of instruments each year, and Grand Guitar Salon generally receives just one or two guitars annually.
